How to Operate the 3M Littmann Classic III Stethoscope
Follow these steps for proper stethoscope usage:
1. Insert the Stethoscope in Your Ears: Orient the eartips toward your nose.
2. Customize Headset Tension for Comfort and Sound Quality: Adjust the eartubes by pulling them apart or squeezing them together.
3. Select the Active Side of the Chestpiece: The stem includes a mark that designates the acoustically active side. Rotate the chestpiece to switch between active sides.
4. Utilize the larger chestpiece for adult patients and the smaller side for pediatric or slender patients, bandaged areas, or carotid assessment.
Enhancing Sound Perception with Littmann Tunable Diaphragms
To accentuate lower or higher frequency sounds, apply the appropriate pressure during auscultation:
1. For lower frequencies, use gentle pressure on the patient.
2. For higher frequencies, exert firm pressure on the patient.

To convert the stethoscope to a traditional open bell, follow these steps:
Hold the large side of the chestpiece with one hand, and with a gloved thumb on the other hand, carefully remove the pediatric diaphragm from the small side of the chestpiece. Install the non-chill sleeve on the open bell.
Stethoscope Cleaning, Disinfection, and Storage Guidelines
For proper maintenance and care of your stethoscope:
– Clean it between exams using a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a disposable wipe with soap and water.
– Disinfect with a 2% bleach solution, although note that tubing may discolor with bleach exposure.
– Ensure all components are dry before reassembly.
– Avoid immersing the stethoscope in liquids, subjecting it to sterilization, or storing it in extreme heat.
– Prevent tubing staining by avoiding contact with pens, markers, newsprint, or other printed materials.
